BRUTISH MUSEUM
Edward Day Gallery Toronto 2006

The Brutish Museum started as a foray into larger format work. Because my sculpture evolves during its creation, I need to work with a framework that can be adapted. This box, 5' x 9', containing 45 smaller boxes, gave me the structured freedom I was looking for. I began by painting it like a chessboard with black objects in the white boxes and vice versa. This, however, was much too busy, so I started to tone it down radically, taking things out of boxes rather than putting them in. Themes evolved: birds, strange creatures, dancing girls, distracted mothers of pod children. I make an appearance in the very middle as a blinkered goat person, confirming the astrological notion of Aries wanting to be at the centre of the action.
